What is Tubal Ligation?
If you are considering permanent birth control, your provider may suggest tubal ligation. During this procedure, the fallopian tubes are either removed or cut and tied. This prevents the egg from traveling to the uterus during the menstrual cycle.
Before scheduling tubal ligation, you can meet with your provider to determine if this is the right solution for you. If you’ve been seeing the same provider for a while—as many of our patients have—you can use this time to ask any questions specific to you and receive a trusted opinion.
How Effective is Tubal Ligation?
Tubal ligation is a permanent solution, meaning it is highly effective in preventing pregnancy. In fact, there is less than a 0.1 percent risk of pregnancy within 10 years of this procedure.
However, it is important to note that this procedure is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to reverse. You may also need to utilize additional birth control methods to protect against Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). Talk to your healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of this permanent method.
